Goldfields Revenue.
A meeting of the joint committee of i ! Borough and County Council was held this morning in the Council Chamben, Albert street. There were present—His I Worship the Mayor (in the chair), and Messrs Brodie, Carpenter, Porter, Speight and McGowan. The clauses of the agreements made by Mr Mackay with the natives we» read; also the portions of the Minirg Districts and other Acts bearing upon the question, all of which hare already appeared in our columns when discussing the Miners' Bights Question. Mr Miller, solicitor, was also, present, and was instructed to collect all the evidence obtainable upon the subject, and hare the same prepared to lay before the Hon. Mr Whitaker upon bis first visit to the Thames, when it is the intention of the local bodies to interview him upon this matter. After considerable discussion the following resolution was mored by Mr Brodie:—"lt having oome under the notice of the Thames Borough and County Councils that certain goldfields revenue which, previous to the abolition of tot
provinces, had been paid to the Auckland \ Provincial Government, has not been paid to the local governing bodies before mentioned as provided in the Financial Arrangements Act 1876, and Amendment Act 1877, therefore the Mayor and County Chairman are hereby instructed to make joint application to the Government, on behalf of the respective bodies for the said revenue, not only that due for the past, but also the current revenue." During the discussion it was stated that the amount of revenue which, had the Provincial Government existed to the present time, would have been payable to it amounts to £22,415 19s 3d.
