[advertisement.] (To the Editor of the Evening Stab.) SIR, —When a man is driven fo make such a stupid defence as that in your last evening's issue, it is a proof po sifive that he is getting pretty considerably stuck in the mud. With regiird to Fleming's, Philp's and Gibbons'aulhopraphe, anyone cnn see who has taken the trouble to wade through Ihe history of the case, that they are forugn to the point, find net worth the paper they are •written on. In the first case Mr Honiss oha^enged F. C. D?an concerning an untruth having reference to the Investiga* tion Committee, and proved the untvath by referring to J?. 0. Dean's own handwriting ; Philp and Gibbons therefore prove nothing either one wny or the other. The only letter •worthy of the f-lightc3t notice is tho one j claiming to be (on F. C. Dean's authority) Bigned by William Lauris; but even supposing it to be co signed, I do not think it requires the sagacity of a sphinx to see a hole i brough a ladder, to see tho pres-ure brought to beor and the motive in signing ib; we all know ihe business relationship existing between IT. C. Dean and Mr Laurie. Yet much as I regret Mr Laurie being placed in Bvrh an uncomfortable position, it ia impossible fcr him to go behind hia own evidence, given'before Dr Skae, and to which he has attached his name; nor even to go behind what he has said to several people WHEN THKBE WAS NO SCBEW PUT ©N, and when he expressed gratitude for the attention h^ had received in the hospital. The public (believe me).will see who is (o Waroe, and will be able to judge between F. C. Dean and Mi Laurie, and will be able to draw a distinction between evidence voluntarily given, and such as is manunfactured and screioed out. Of course it is quite ) ossible that the letter was never signed by Mr Laurie at all, and of the two, that is the hypothesis I should prefer taking. Now, bb I intend this to close the, correspondence on my side at least, I will jußfc sum up: Mr Laurie came to the Hospital and an unusual amount of interest was taken in bis leg. I saw that there was a chance of m&king a first class job of it and epa>.ed no pains, and did make a first class job of it. After leaving tho hospital, be unfortunately finds Borne vermin at the bottom of the splint. Of course, we are all Borry for it, but as Dr Bkae says, ifc might occur in any Hospital in the world. Dean heara of ifc^(and wishing to keep in with a certain dearly beloved friend of his, who, report saj b, helped him into his present billet) and built lip the pretty little game he amused Dr Skae with, on the above sandy foundation. A few cramß follow aa matter of course to prop up the fabric. That is my theory of the whole business, and to support ifc, anyone taking the trouble to enquire of Mr Ailkon, Dispenser, will be informed of a few other interesting little fants, which may all come out in their proper time. If iP. C. Dean could only see himself m others see him, or hear what others say about him, it may be he would not make such a fool of himself.—l am, &c., Mabtin H. Payne. 24th September, 1880.
