PALMERSTON NORTH.
This day
At Hie close of the District Court business last evening a deputation from the Borough Council waited on Judge ffardcastlo Lo ask him to again communicate with Government and urge the absolute necessity of the immediate erection of hew buildings for which the money was now on the Estimates. Yesterday was a pouring wot iky, and the jurors not em« pannelled, along with the witnesses were obliged to crouch outside the building for shelter, as there was no room inside. The jury marched down the street to an empty house to consider their verdict. Part of the Court fixtures had to be removed so as to allow forms for 12 jury men to sit on. The judge informed the deputation that he heartily agreed with the strictures, and he had recently written to the Justice Department on the matter, and promised to take fresh action so as to have the building erected before next sittings.
A notorious character named Thomas Pearce, alias " Itoll and go," well known in Nelsou, was sentenced to 12 months for a brutal assault.
