CALEDONIAN.
The manager's weekly report is as follows .—"The south face, No. 1 sectioD, No. 3 level, is still in the heart of the lode. It is now nearly on the old boundary line of the Caledonian and Otago blocks. lam cutting towards the hang-ing-wall nearly on the square of the lode, which now shows a thickness of over ten feet from the footwall, without any indication of being nearly through. The face is full of silvery minerals, but does not yet carry payablo gold. Every test shows that the reef is not barren. The stone is hard, and the process necessarily slow, about seven feet being passed through in the week. It is evident from the constant discharge of gas that there is an open lode ahead of the present face. Winze, No. 1 section : The lode has been blasted down for a thickness of twelve feet from the footwall, for a height of over twenty feet. The hanging-wall has not yet been reached. The stone shows an improvement, but is not yet payable. In taking down the lode in this way the greatest possible area is proved at the cheapest rate. I hope to find better stone nearer the hanging-wall No. jJ section, No. 2 level winze: Four loi&k of quartz taken from here gave a return of 2-| ozs of gold. This is about payable, as the quartz was easily taken out. I am sinking here on good ground, as the cheapest and surest way of proving the direction of the run of gold.—Thomas James." REUBEN PARR. ■ In the Twenty-third of Juno low level drive, a slide has crossed the face of tbe drive. When the reef is picked up again I expect that an improvement will be found to have taken place. -A little.gold is being seen in the leader driven on ia the upper level. "
