General Roberts' Attack. Calcutta, September 3. Reconnoitring parties have been sent out from the British camp, and they report that the enemy are entrenched in a position of great strength. News has been received from Candahar that General Roberts has commenced operations for an attack on Ayoub Khan's position at Nimsayah. AyouT) Khan's Forces Routed— 27 Chins Captured, Later intelligence has been received that General Roberts, with a large force, attacked Ayoub Khan at Nirasayah yesterday, and a desperate engagement ensued, but the enemy were unable to withstand the fierce attack made upon their positions. These were gradually abandoned and captured by the British. Ayoub's troops fought desperately, and made a most gallant defence; but they were ultimately completely dispersed. 27 guns, composing ,the whole of the enemy's artillery, were captured by the British troops. No particulars have yet come to hand of the loss hf killed, wounded, and prisoners, inflicted on Aboub, neither is the British loss yet stated. London, September 3. Evacuation of Candahar, The Marquis of Hartington, the Secretary of State for India, in reply to a deputation, laid stress on the difficulty and inconvenience which would be caused by retaining possession of Candahar, and further hinted at its evacuation shortly. General Phayre, with further reinforcements, is continuing his march from Khojak iri&99t-&fpffsiii6n?sti d "Candahar to-morrow. The Latest. Calcutta, September 1. Further intelligence to hand reports that Ayoub Khan's camp has been captured. His troops have fled to Khabrez, and the Herates have also fled to Kelmund, the British troops pursuing. Several hundred have been killed. British loss: three officers, 17 men killed, and 650 wounded and missing.
