THE SOIREE.
(To the Editor of the Evening Stab.)
Sib, —I took an active part in agitating for a soiree for Mr Speight, but I now find fault with the Committee for in* serting in the advertisement that the citizens of the Thames are giviug this soiree. As oue who thinks with Mr Speight in the total abstinence question, I like to do him honor, and besides, he has done well about the railway, and is our representative in Shortland, so I thought we should give him a soiree, but I object to having it said that the citizens at large gave it. Good Templar is South Wabd.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sir,—Without wishing to detract from the services rendered to the community by Mr Speight, I as one of the public object to the soiree to be given in his honor, being styled as from the citizens of the Thames. If it was so I think our representative men should have been on the committee, in scanning over the names of which I see nothing but a few Good Templar friends, a number of Shortland men, and I am sure Mr Speight would appreciate the honor far more highly if those inaugurating the reception were from the ranks of our leading citizens.-—Yours &c, Cbis.
