DUNEDIN.
This day. Mr Armstrong, late locomotive superintendent, was presented with 100 soys. and a complimentary address by Mr Conyers, Commissioner of Middle island Bailways, on behalf of 500 railway employees, and another testimonial will probably be presented to Armstrong by the general public.
Mr Armstrong, in reply to the address, said he positively denied that there had ever been afforded him an opportunity of rebutting the charges brought against him, but he had been condemned unheard. In conclusion he said he had never, in the whole course of his life, seen such an exhibition of malice, treachery, and untruthfulness as had been displayed in conection with the whole of this miserable business.
The particulars of the scheme for the graduated scale of payment and promotion for Middle Island railway employees has been approved of by Mr Oliver and has been made known to the officers of the department. About 150 persons attended the meeting of the employees, and it was stated that the meeting would be unanimous in striking against the ten per cent, reduction as at first proposed, but they decided to suspend all actioa until the new scale is more generally known, and to ask Christchurch to do the same.
It is understood that the revised scale of railway wages will be issued tomorrow.
