This day.
The inquiry re the alleged ill-treatment of a prisoner at the Nelson gaol, which was adjourned for the attendance of the late warder (Atkinson), was opened today. It being understood that Atkinson bad declined to attend, after the examination of the prisoner, the constable, and several prisoners, a telegram from the Minister of Justice was read stating that Atkinson would proceed hither from Wanganui, and inconsequence an adjournmeat was made until his arrival.
