This day

Capt. Kapp, of the barque Italy, who lately arrived from Port Esperance, Tasmania, was charged at the Police Court this morning with smuggling opossum rugs. He was fined £100, which was mitigated to £35.

A meeting of railway employees was held, at Lawrence station on Sunday evening to take into consideration the present action of the Government in reducing the wages 10 per cent. The following resolution was unanimously passed :—" That this meeting thinks it is unfair for Government to reduce 10 per cent, off salaries and wages, and this meeting unanimously pledges itself to abide by the decision arrived at by Dunedin and Ghristchurch meetings."
