CHRISTCHURCH.
This day.
A couple of men going overland from this place to the Okarito rush on foot, lost their way at Malvern, >nd one of them fell over a precipice 40 feet high. His mate managed to get round to the foot of the
cliff, and found him badly injured, but alive. An inquest was held into the cause of the fire at the railway station on Sunday, and the following verdict was returned :—-" The opinion of the jury is that the place had been wilfully set on fire, but there was no evidence to show by whom. The jury regret that the premises were not left as they were found after the fire."
A telegram received from the master of the schooner Sarah and Mary states that the vessel is totally wrecked on Motuara Island. She was bound from Lyttelton to Hokitika.
