Inquest.

Ap inquest on the body of Robert Otter was held at the old Court House, Shortland, today at 11 o'clock, before Dr Kilgour, Coroner, and a jury of whom J. W. Adlam was chosen Foreman.

After viewing the body, the following evidence was adduced :—

Eliza Ann Otter (wife of the deceased) deposed to deceased leaving the house on the morning of Monday last. On going to bed the night previous, he said he did not feel very well. He had been desponding for a week previous on account of business being bad. For a number of years he had been subject to fits of despondency. (Witness gave evidence of facts already known). Albert Hunter and Alfred Joslin deposed to finding the body lying on the mud bank opposite Banks' slaughterhouse. ..Joslin attached the body to a stake, and Hunter proceeded to the station and warned the police. Neither of them searched the body, which was . lying face downwards. Constable Stapleton deposed to taking charge of the body. He searched the deceased and found no marks of violence. He found a knife, match box, pocket handkerchief and pipe case on the body.

The jury, without retiring, returned a verdict to the effect—" That deceased took bis own life while in a state of temporary insanity."
