AUCKLAND.
This day. The contractors for the East Hamilton
station at Waikato came upon a number of human skeletons on Thursday, and now scarcely & dray load of earth is taken from the cutting that does not contain skulls, large bones, etc. There is an old pah near, and report says that before the Waikato was conquered by the Europeans a whole hapu was surprised near this spot and completely wiped out.
Young Willis commenced to walk 108 miles in 24 hours at half past nine last night. At 3 a.m. he had accomplished 31 miles with comparative ease, and at 11 this morning had completed 67 miles.
The Mib Handicap walking match for a silver cup was won by J. Hill, who received 35 yards of a start, in 7mins. lsec.; W. Hancoek, 80 yards start, 7'mins. and ssecs. second.
