The Afghan War.
Operations against Ayoub Khan.
Calcutta, August 3.
Orders were given to General Roberts to march with the northern division of the British army in Afghanistan, numbering 10,000 men, to the relief of General Burrows at Candhar. ,
General Roberts has farther been ordered to act in conjunction with the troops cider General Phayre and Sandeman from the Bholan Pass, so that the combined forces may operate against Ayoub Khan.
It now transpires that the telegraph line between Cabal and the frontier was not cut by the hostile tribes as at first supposed/but was interrupted by some other cause. ,
Calcutta, August 4.
Intelligence Las been received from Afbauistan that Ayoub Khan .has ad*
vanced to Merkarez for the purpose of attacking the British troops under General Phayre, which reached Chamanj recently from the Bholan Pass, and which is on its way to reinforce General Burrows at Candahar, but were unable to proceed owing to the disturbed state of the country. It is further stated that Ayoub Khan is sending a strong force to intercept supplies from the Bholan Pass.

In the House of Lords last night the Irish Tenants Compensation Bill which was sent up from the House of Commons came under discussion. After the debate the bill was rejected by 282 to 51.
London, August 3.
The Eight Hon. Mr Gladstone is progressing favorably. The fever is diminishing.
The match between Australians and 11 of Gloucester County team, at Clifton, was continued to-day. The Home team went in to finish their innings, and were all disposed of for 191 runs. Palmer took 6 wickets. The Australians then went in for their second innings, and were all out for 246 runs. McDonald was caught for 79 runs. Bonner was also caught for 35 runs. The attendance was very large. The fielding of the Home team was very weak.
