The Morning Post, while regretting Mr Service's defeat, hopes that the parties are still somewhat evenly balanced in the Victorian Parliament, and as no politician here endorses Mr Berry's extreme views, whilst the Home Government regarded Service's proposals as a reasonable settle* ment of the reform question. Mr Berry will now consent to a compromise in order to terminate the strife. The attendance at the Kifle Association meeting at Wimbledon is very large, and the shooting the best yet recorded. London, July 19. The Daily News says the French i Ambassador at Constantinople has warned j the Sultan that in the event of his resis* ; tunee of the decision of the Berlin Con* ference he will meet with the fate of the Khedive of Egypt. Up to the present time 12 Liberals and five Conservatives have been unseated on petition. The, Pall Mall Gazette, in an article on the reform question of Victoria, says " that a more legitimate way will be to change the personer of the Assembly so as to give greater confidence to property holders." The proposed system of payment of members *is not calculated to secure the best, men; but while the sum is in excess of the amount necessary for recouping their actual expenses, yet it offers compensation to an undesirable class, who have failed in ordinary business, and have no stake in the country. The Norwegian system would cure the present evils, but the raising of the personel of the assembly would be the real remedy.
