Mr Birch, sheriff for the province, went to Hoardings' property at Mount Vernon yesterday to interview the natives who refused to give up possession in spite of the order of the Supreme Court. A scientific examination of the so-called gold bearing quartz from Te Ante shows that it contains no gold. The metallic appearance is due to the refraction of light through portions of the surface. This appearance misled old gold diggers and defied the microscope. Pressure was applied to the fractures disturbed by reflection of light, and disclosed the true character of tbe appearance. The stone is of the Jasper family.
A fire this morning destroyed two old cottages. They were insured in the South British for £150, and in the New Zealand for £100.
