CALEDONIAN.

This morning the men working at the No. 3 level crosscut broke into another lode. The No. 2 level had been driven through for a distance of nine feet, and after a baud of mullock four feet thick had been removed the banging wall of this new reef was disclosed. The lode is well defined, and running at a greater underlie than its neighbor, and will probably effect a junction just below the floor of the level. Its size is not yet known, and the manager has proved it to be auriferous by tests. He sent the following telegram regarding it to the directors, a copy of which he supplied to the Broker's Association:—" Another lode outside crosscut; favourable appearance; well-defined.'' The manager's report is as follows:—A large portion of the week has been taken up in clearing the dirt accumulated in the different woikings during ihe stoppage of windings. The lode in No. 3 level crosscut is not yet cleared off the footwall. That portion of the footwall shipped towards the south shows nearly perpendicular, and the stone is very much improved in appearance. North East Workings, No 3 Level.—l have cleaned out here, and am securing the ground preparatory to rising and stoping on the lode. There is about 2 feet of mineralised stone showing a little gold. Winze, No. 2 Level.—l had purposed letting a contract here today for sinking under the lode through to No. 3 level, but another flat lode is touched in the bottom, striking into the main reef. This prevents the letting, a,s the price would be very high as now shewing. The new poppet-head is completed, and the whole gear is working satisfactorily. I am now prepaid for pushing ahead vigorously with the different workings. The mine for the whole length of the ground is new below JN o. 2 level, and the fact that the best stone found strikes back east into the heart of the ground, make-, it more valuable than would have been judged from the appearances in the upper levels.—Thos. James.
