In view of the renewal of an angry scene on O'Donnell's amended question as to the propriety of the reception of the French Ambassador, intense anxiety was displayed in the House of Commons as to the action the Government would take in the matter. O'Donnell, who is a Boman Catholic, alleges Lafour plundered the convent and ordered the massacre of troops at Lyons during the period of the Commune. All parties censure O'Donnell's illconsidered proceedings, but the Press condemn Mr Gladstone's hastily attempting to prevent O'Donnell's motion as threatening the right of private members. It ii considered, however, that Mr Gladstone's prompt action shows a determination to suppress obstruction. June 16th.
It is stated that the whole staff of the French Embassy has resigned in consequence of Latour's appointment as Ambassador of France to London. Gladstone, at the last moment, was compelled to revise the wine tariff in order secure the French Treaty. The Daily News states that the Chinese are preventing Russian subject! from entering China. M. Tisard, Minister of Agriculture and Commerce _. speaking in the French Synod, denied that there was any engagement with England to enter into a fre3h Commercial Treaty. He referred to Gladstone's proposal as being contrary to French interests. , The Berlin Conference to deal with the question of unfulfilled reforms by Turkey, and rectification of the Greek frontier, assembles today. The Duke of Manchester proceeds to Melbourne as Honorary Commissioner, and will be accompanied by his daughter, Lady Alice Montague. Childera, Minister of War, and Thomas Brassey, 'Chief Lord of the Admiralty, have resigned as being members of the Colonial Deferice Commission. The Commission has adjourned sitting until August. Cooper, of New South Wales, and Macalister, Agent-General of Queensland,
have already beeu examined by the Agent-General of PoutV Australia, and will be examined when the Commission reassemble. It is not. expected that the report will b<? ready before 1881. The Albanians have issued a circular, directed to the Powers, protesting against the cession of Janina and other places to Montenegro, and declaring that rather than submit they will perish with their wives and families.
