Meeting of Licensed Victuallers.
The adjourned meeting of the Licensed Victuallers wa9 held at the W narf Ho? jI this afternoon, Mr Barton ri the Gh 'r. There was a large attendance.
Before proceeediug with the bus* jess Mr Stepuensoo made a statement with reference to the remarks appearing iv the Advertiser concerning the recent desi; action of his hotel-by fi-.'e. He showed that so far from be;ng bsnefitt'd by the fi-e he was at a dead loss of £6CO, the insurances being made for the protection of the mortgagees. He made the statement because he had been intrusted with the responsible position of their delegate, which he considered an honor.
The Chairman reau several telegram he had received since last meeting several of them being from Mr Eowe, who had volunteered to represent the Thames at the Conference til. Mr Stephenson arrived. Mr Mahoney, as one of the canvassing comontee, reported that they had visited 41 houses, and had received £20. The brewers would also .contribute. AH tho puWicans had signed a naper agreeing to se.H beer at a uniform cnarge of 6d per pint—both indoor and outdoor.
In answer to the Chairman, Mr said he would be able to go on Thursday. He underscood that the Auckland Association would not assist them, but they would feel the want of representation more than the Thames, as there was a clause enabling confectioners to take out a beer license, Mr Stephenson then said ho w duld g•> onf' 1' ursday '=? the meeting jf he rett= ;t*d li.c corfi dence.
Several members expressed an opinion if they thought anything was w;'ong they would tell him of it.
On the motion of Mr Constant, the meeting passed a vote of sympathy with Mr Stephenson in his late calamity.
The meeting then confirmed the resolution at last meeting regarding the fixing of the price of beer, and the uniform charge of 6d per pint. Mr Vaughan proposed that half-pints be abolished.
Mr Pearce seconded.
After some discussion the resolution was withdrawn, there being some difference of opinion respecting it. It was decided to confirm the raising of the price of English ale and porter to 2s per bottle. Some trade business of a private character was proceeding when we went to press. ■
