The ground was taken up for tti^urpose of working the Yale of Avoca lode—twin reef to the famous Sons of Freedom—and from which in surface operations such splendid results were obtained. I visited the workings today and was shown through and the position of the mine fully explained by the court eons manager, Mr Mcllhany. A fine tunnel has been driven a distance of 110 feet, for the greater portion of which hard ground had to be contended against., The course of the drive is now being slightly changed, and the: manager . has no doubt but that he will intersect the reef in a day or two—indeed, it would have been to hand ere now had not the underlie been miscalculated. The main object in cutting the lode is to get the old Vale of Avoca run. I was shown a small drive put in in the early days, situated about 160 feet from the lower drive, and on going in saw the reef. It is a likely looking body of stone about 4 feet thick. I was informed that another lode of equal size runs parallel with this lode about 80 feet to the Bouthwrrd, and there are also several cross lodes from the Alburnia and Devon which mast traverse the company's ground... ;.. , ..--. ... ;> _„,:; /,-,,,;■■■ ■
