This day.
An arson case occupied the Supreme Court all Friday and till 10 o'clock on Saturday, wheu a verdict of "Not Guilty " was returned, the jury adding that they considered there were strong suspicions against Clarke and Thomson.
At a crowded meeting held at Gerald on Saturday night it was resolved, that while approving of the Property Tax as sound in principle this meeting respectfully recommends to Government the following matters for their consideration :—l. That all the contents of the third schedule or personal property statement may be exempted with the exemption of money secured on mortgages, bills of sale, etc. 2. That a tax be placed on incomes of persons not being ratepayers on lease or property holders. 3. That exemption of £500 be reduced to £400. 4. .That the honorarium to members of the Legislative Council be discontinued. 5. That in case of appeal better provisions. should be made to securo justice to appellants.
