DUNEDIN.
This day. An inques'j was held on the body of, Martha Lockhart, who died under suspicious circumstances on Friday night. The evidence showed tbat he? husband was in the habit of ili-treatiag her, and had struck her the night before her
death. A verdict of manslaughter was returned against the husband, Charles Lockhart, who was committed for trial.
Mr James Fulton, M.H.E., for Taieri, addressed his constituents at Outram, and said he was in favour of a reduction in the expenditure. He could not see how the conutry could do without a Property Tax. It was inquisitorial, but not so much as the Income Tax would be. He disapproved of the Land Tax, and said the Electoral Bill would not affect the Taieri district. Comprehensive measures were required to deal with Publcans Licenses and he would support the Permissive Bill. He would also support the subsidies to counties till a better provision could be made, such as extending rating powers. Election petitions should be decided by Supreme Court Judges, and not by a committee. He would support a reimposition of school fees.
A vote of thanks and confidence was passed.
