NEW WHAU.
On visiting the mine t>day I found men vigorously at work taking down the quartz in the winze the lode having now been brought down to within 12 feet of back of stope. There are from three to four feet of quartz at this point with colors of gold showing, and the reef has a promising appearance, carrying the right sort of minerals., The stripping of the reef in the stopes still proceeds though no quartz has been broken, nor will be lill the quartz in the winze is brought down " flush " with the back of the stope. When this is done all the stuff will be shot down the passes. I should say there is about 30 tons of the winze stuff already broken, all of which is good crushing dirt. In the face of the drive about 2| frat of the hanging wall portion of the lode is saved for crushing. I was informed that gold had been sees in the lower portion of the face, but could not discern any. However, the pare was blackened with powder and candle smoke. Generally the reef is greatly improved, though the footwall portion has still to be sent away as mullock. !
