This day.

W. H. Nichol, who left in the Gall schooner for Fiji, and suffered from delirium tremens, was put in irons. During a squall, while the crew were shortening sail, he jumped overboard, and was not seen afterwards. He suffered under a delusion that ho had committed forgery and was wanted by Sergeant Martin. He leaves a wife and family, and was a son of the late Mr Nichol, of the Masonic Hotel.

A man named Eobert Thompson fell through the glass Verandah at the Albert Hotel this morning sustaining severe injuries. Frederick Oram, charged with forgery and uttering a cheque for seven pounds was committed for trial. The Police in Trouble. At the Police Court, Mr Bloom, a respectable shop keeper, was charged with obstructing the police in the execution of their duty. Inspector Pardy said the constables used unnecessary violence and withdrew the charge. Mr Bloom had laid a charge of assault against Constable Eoss and Igoe, but withdrew it on a promise that the men should be punished under the Police Regulations, and pay eleven pounds expenses. The particulars are these:—Bloom was standing in the front of his own shop door, when be was told to move on, and on refusing two constables knocked him down, knelt on him handcuffed him and dragged him to the station, and put him into a cell with two drunkards, refusing bail until John Cosgrave, Esq., procured his release. The case has caused much public indignation. Ross is a young, member of the Force.
