INVERCARGILL.
This day. Sir George Grey at Invercargill.
Sir George Grey was honoured with a .splendid reception at tho railway station last evening. A crowd followed him to the Club Hotel. At 8 o'clock the Prill, shed was crowded, at least 1500 persons being present. Sir George Grey spoke on education, taxation, the withdrawal of subsidies, immigration, Christchurch election, He also characterised the attempt to increase the Customs' duties as an evasion of the land-holders' fair return for railway and immigration expenditure, and as an attempt to saddle the poorer persons with what the landholders should pay. The beginning and conclusion of the address were loudly cheered.
The Liberal Association have received a telegram from the Hon. Mr Hall in reply to a requisition expressing regret thai be* cannot find time to address tbe electors of Southland previous ■to the meeting of Parliament.
