The Water Drainage.
The drainage of the deeper levels of the mines on the flat is .proceeding slowly, and now tbe local bodies have agreed to assist to defray the cost of pumping, let us hope that there will be no more of those harrassing and disheartening threats to stop the pump. Measurements made to-day by the Mining Under?fcwer show the distance from the sill to the top of the water in the different shafts to be as follows :—Queen of Beauty 248 feet, Piako 235, and CroWn Princess 260 feet. There is some dissatisfaction expressed at the length of time taken by tbe Qaeen of Beauty before making a start, knowing ones professing to see an ulterior object in the delay. However, the turbine has mad£» its trial revolutions, and sometime daring"' the coming week a permanent start -will be made. The delays occasioned by the inferior ventilation of the Caledonian and other mines in that vicinity has been a matter of comment, and really something should be dove to improve it, as not only ' is human life in danger, but much valuable time is lost.
