RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
THIS DAY.
(Before H. Kenriok, Esq., R.M.) lAECENY OF A COAT. Horomona te Wateine, a Tauranga Native, was brought up on three charges, viz., (1.) With stealing a coat the property of Mr Goldwater, value £1 7s 6d. {2.) With resisting the authority of the constable. (3) With damaging the tunic and cap of the constable. All of j which were committed on the 19th inst. The defendant admitted the first charge, but said he wished to siy something regarding the second. Constable JefFsry'said that he went to Parawai to execute a search warrant. He found the stolen coat, and apprehended the prisoner. The prisoner was very violent, and he was compelled to cell in extra assistance before being able to convey him to the station. A scuffle took place, but he ultimately succeeded in capturing prisoner. The prisoner said that when Mr Goldwater came up he said to the policeman, "Be careful, or he will run." That made him mad, and he was not responsible for what he did after. He should have gone quietly if Mr Goldwater had not used those words. Sab Inspector Kenny said he hoped the Bench would made an example of the prisoner, iv order to show the Maoris how serious it was to resist the authority of a police officer wb" c in the execution cf his duty. The Bench sentenced the prisoner to cix months' imprisonment with hard labor for stealing the coat, and to two nunihs' imprisonment for assaulting the constable, the - two sentences to run concurrently. He was also ordered to pay £3 ss, the value of the damaged clothes, or take two months extra in default.
