WELLINGTON.
This day. Opening of thQ Weiliagfcoa and Mastertoa Railway. The Grey town section of the Welling-ton-Masterton railway was opened this morning. The train came through at the appointed time. All went smoothly, only there were very few passengers. Some twenty men assembled at the station on the arrival of the train, including the Mayor and Councillors. It is raining heavily. Fire. A fire broke out in Mr Alexander's boarding house, Murphy street, last night
at 11.20. Tt originated in the back kitchen, but how is unknown. All the inmates were in bed whea the alarm was given by a neighbour. The house was completely destroyed, and the cottage next door, occupied by Mr Cosgrove, Parliamentary messeuger, and Mr "Johnstone's carpenter's workshop were also destroyed. The most of Cosgrove's fur nilure was removed. The contents of Captain Holliwood's house were also removed, but the fire did not catch his house. The water supply was very bad.
The following are the insurances on the buildings destroyed by fire last night. Alexander's house, £350 in the. South British and £300 in the Colonial. The furniture was insured for £250 in the Union. ' Cosgrove's house was insured for £150 in the Colonial.
