NEW WHAU.
This mine was visited to-day* and since last visit it was noticed that a very large ' amount of work has been done. I was unable to inspect the reef in the winze, as the men were at work constructing a ladder road. Access was obtained to the bottom of the winze by the Alburnia 160 feet level. I found that the reef has been stripped for a length of 40 or 50 feet, and with the portion stripped in the stope and rise, there is fully "200 tons of quartz ready to be broken out. . I was. informed that the manager is only waiting till the passes are constructed before all this will be taken down. The ladder road will be com* pleted iv a day or two. Of course under present circumstances, it is impossible to express an opinion on the merits .of the reef, bat I can say that tbe country bean the appearance of that generally met with in the neighbourhood of an auriferous deposit, and the exposed wall if a fine clean one. Nothing farther can be known till a breaking down takes place.
