Koberts to open negotiations with some of the leading hostile chiefs, in order to bring about a termination of the war. The British General has modified to some extent the terms of peace originally proposed, and the overtures made have been received in a friendly spirit. Hopes are entertained that many influential sirdars now opposed to the British occupation may be induced to attend a conference for the purpose of deciding as to the means of restoring * tranquility, and placing the government of the country upon a permanent and satisfactory footing.
