London, April 23 COMMERCIAL.

The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1)790,000 quarters, beiug 120,000 quarters less than last week. Australian tallow is dull and declining, best beef 328, best mutton 33s 6d. The Wool Sales. At the wool sale to-day 10,900 bales were offered. A firm and active demand was maintained. Tenders for Oamsru Waterworks Loan of £89,000 were opened to-day, £76,000 are offered at from £96 to £101|, aud the balance of £13,000 at £96. London, April 25. Consols advanced to 99. ' New Zealand securities remain unchanged. Australian and New Zealand breadstuffs remain at last quotations. At to-day's wool auction 11,700 bales offered, making a total of 53,000 catalogued since the opening. A firm and active demand was again shown at the sale.

London, April 24. Mr Gladstone has been appointed First Lord of the Treasury and Chancellor of the Exchequer. He has accepted the task of forming the new Ministry. It is probable that Earl Granville will accept office as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. ■April 23. The Eight Hon. W. E. Gladstone has been summoned by the Queen. He returns to Windsor to-day, when it is expected he will decline the (ask of forming the new Ministry, but will propose Mr Gladstone, who will probably be summoned by her Majesty today. Calcutta, April 23. , RESUMPTION OF HOSTILITIES IN AFGHANISTAN. - Hostilities have been resumed in Afghanistan. A severe attack was made on General Stewart's force in the vicinity of Ghuznee, when 15000 Afghans endeavoured to reduce the British position, but were defeated with heavy loss. The-British loss at present is unknown. General Stewart's vanguard entered Ghuznee on the 20th inst.

McLaren (Liberal, brother-in-taw to Mr John Bright) hq.s again beenek >.ed for Edinburgh. Sir William Harcourt (Liberal) has been re-elected by the city of Oxford, and the Hon. E. Bourke, Dnder-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, has again been returned for King's Lynn. The election for Lambeth resulted in the re-election of Sir James Lawrence and Alderman Me Arthur (Liberals). E'or the Tower Hamlets Mr Charles T. Ritchie (Conservative) and Mr Joseph D. A. Samnda (Liberal) have been returned. For Marylebone Mr W. Forsyth, QC. ; (Conservative), was defeated. Sir Thomas Chambers and another Liberal being I elected. In the contest for York City, | the Hight Hon. James. Lowther, Secretary for Ireland, was defeated, his minority being only nine. London, April 12th. The Indian Government will contribute £1000 towards a project for placing the teas on the Australian market. Whitehead'/s Meat Impoi'tation Company is announced, with a capital of £150,000. The Illawarra Steam Navigation Company's new steamer Ramaska sailed for Sydney on the Bth inst.
