Thames Borough Council.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening. Present— His Worship the Mayor, Crs Mennie, Osborne, McGos an, Speight, Wilkinson, Bawdeu, Marshall. CORRESPONDENCE OUTWARD. ■A'precis of outward correspondence since last meeting was read over. THB BIG pump. A letter was read from the Moanatairi Company, stating that a meeting of the directors of mining companies interested in the Big Pump would be held on the 29th iost. The company had relied on the contributions from the Council, which had not been forthcoming, and several of the raining companies had not contributed. The meeting was for consultation. Or Wilkinson said that he did not see what the Borough had to do with it. He moved that the letter be received Carried. RECREATION GROUND FENCE. Mr Stevens, of Kauaeranga Valley, wrote complaining of the inefficiency of the fence dividing the Racreaticu Giound and his farm. A report fr. m the Foreman of Works accompanied thte letter, and slated that the improvement required would occupy two men one day. The weakness, of the fence was caused by some person making a slip panel. It was decided that the Council could do nothing in the matter. COMMUNICATION WXjH THE HARD. A letter was read froji the Harbour Board complaining of the cutting off of the communication between Mary street and the Hard by the Railway embankment. This and similar matters were referred to the Works Committee to report to next meeting. DAMAGE TO MAINS. A letter was read from W. Laurie, complaining of the Shortland Fire Brigade's carelessness in bursting two of the nine-inch mains, the replacing of which cost the.- Borough £12. The) breakages were caused by the water . being turned off 100 quickly. The Town Clerk said, by the direction of the Mayor he bad written to Superintendent HolJis asking that greater care bo exercised, It was decided to postpone consideration until a reply was received from Mr Hollis. MR MASON. A letter was received from the Government in reply to one from the Council stating that they were of opinion that Mr J. B. Mason should be considered a Public officer, and not be required to pay Court fens when taking out summonses. The I writer stated that he was directed to | reply that Town Clerks were not " public officers" within the meaning of the Justices of the Peace Act, 1866. HANSARD ETC. A letter was read from Under-Secretary

Cooper, stating that copies of Hansard etc., had been forwarded to the Borough Council. BOROUGH STATISTICS. A letter was received from the Regis-trar-General asking Borough Statistics. Received. CHARITABLE AID. I A letter was received from the Municipal Council of Christchurcli, conveying a resolution re Charitable Aid. Receired. BOROUGH ENDOWMENTS. A telegram was received from the Crown Lands Commissioner, asking tbe gross value of Thames Municipal Endowments and the rent derived. The Town Clerk said the communication had been answered. A telegram from Mr H. J. H.Elliott, stated the grant for Thames endowment had been signed aud Would be sent to the Commissioner of Crown Lands nt once. GOID DUTY. A treasury voucher for £13111s lOd, gold duty, was received. j CBOSSING. i A letter was received from James Sawyer, asking permission to make a cart-crossing over tbe footpath in Pollen street. Referred to the Foreman of Works. HOSPITAI COMMITTEE. Crs Marshall, Mennie and Osborne were appointed to represent the Borough Council on the Hospital Committee. • LIBEAEY COMMITTEE. The old members of the Library Committee were reelecled. WATEB SUPPLY.

The Mayor said Cr Speight, the Town Clerk^and himself went to Auckland to meet Mr Whitaker re the Water Supply. He then related the history of the settlement of the Water Supply question. By the arrangement made the Borough received 180,000 gallons per day and could let the surplus water for any purpose they wished. Mr Whitaker had promised to put the agreement on a legal footing. Cr Osboii.l3 moved a vote of thanks to the Mayor, Cr Speight, and the Town Clerk for their services in the matter. Carried. The Mayor said the Borough should be congratulated for the settlement of this vexed question. He thanked them for the vote of thanks. Cr McGowan moved that Crs Marshall, Speight, Mennie, aud the Mayor be a committee to report on matters in connection with the laying of the 9 inch mains in Pollen street. Carried. STAND-PIPE. The May r thought the 1 stand-pipe in. Campbell street should be repaired. After some discussion it was decided that if the residents would provide the tap the Comc'l would erect the &-iird. MACKY STREET. Cr McGowan moved that the Foreman of Works be instructed to send a man. to clean out the water-table in Mackay street, near Phillips' stables. Carried. COUNTY POOR EEIIEF. A letter was read from the Count? Council requesting to be furnished witii particulars of account for £311, which had been represented to Government as having been paid by the Borough Council on account of charitable aid to persons resident in the County, for the year ended the 31st December last. It was resolved to inform the County Council that the documents relating to the account had been sent to Wellington, but that the Council would give all the information on the subject possible. This concluded the business.
