J, C, Young's Case.—Discharge of the Accused. In the second charge against J. C. Young, the late. Government Land Purchase Officer, charged with embezzlement of Government monies, the jury at eleven returned a verdict of not guilty, attaching the following presentment, " That the system of native land purchase expenditure as disclosed by tho evidence is extremely loose and reprehensible, and affords no sufficient check against fraud by persons employed as agents." Tbe other charges were to be heard today» but at the opening of the Court, the Crown Prosecutor announced their withdrawal. The Judge, in discharging Young, said he had been guilty of gross dereliction of duty in payment of monies, aud had brought the prosecution on himself but he was satisfied that the prisoner had no intention of appropriating the monies to his own use. •
