We have lo remind our readers of the Ancient order of Foresters' annualsoiree, concert, and dance, which 'will be held.at the Academy of Music this evening. Feom un advertisement in another column it will be seen that Professor Taylor and Lillie, of skating renown, will open tomorrow, with their clever rinking performance, in the Academy of Music. They have been successful wherever they have been, and we have no doubt tkey will draw a good house. These is on exhibition at Mr Lawless' shop a very handsome vase of wax flowers made by Mrs Whitehead. All the flowers are common in this country, and so closely resemble nature that a very close inspection is necessary to show that they are counterfeits. We have been requested to. state that the late Mr Syvrett's life is not insured. Subscriptions are now being called for, in aid of the widow and orphans. We understand that it is chiefly owing to the exertions of our third member, Mr J. B. Whyte, that the County Council | have received the vote of £2000 for exi pendituro on the Pacroa-Te Aroha road.

On receiving 'the promise of the grant from Mr Oliver,-Mr Why to at once telegraphed the pleasing intelligence to Mr Brodie, and that gentlemen sent the following reply:—"j. B. Whyte, Esq., Auckland.—Your Thames constituents thank you heartily for your successful effort on tbeir behalf. The work will be the means of uniting more strongly the Waikato and Thames districts —A. Bkodie." We noticed in several of the local grocery establishments today a quantity of Mr R. Hudson's canned peaches. Each flan weighs 2£lbs, and the labels are most tastefully got up, having been lithographed by Messrs Wilsons and Horton, of Auckland. We wish this new local industry every success. To day, the day devoted to the patron saint of " Merrie England" was only notict d as a holiday by the banks beingclosed. A number of Thames people went to Auckland yesterday, to attend the races at Ellerslie, there being no local amusenieuls. : The County Council have received a telegram from the Tauranga County Council approving, of the line of road between Thames and Tauranga, via Hikurangi Gorge. This is the same line of road on which the .Thames County Council expended £1500 last year. The Government have granted Tauranga a considerable sum for expenditure on this road, and we may shortly expect to see good road communication between this district and the East Coast.
