THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 1880.

The amount of telegrams and local matter compel us to hold orer our usual leading article.

The decision of the R.M. in ordering the public from the Court to-day caused great disappointment, for orer 150 people had assembled in anticipation of hearing the case against young Short. ~ The Harbor Board let this morning the allotments on the foreshore near the S'aortlaad wharf. No. 1 was rented by Mr Dodd for 5 years at £6 5s per year, No. 2 by Mr Onyon at £12 10s per year, and a native took JTo. 3 at the same rate as No. 2. A meeting of the Orphanage Committee took place last evening for the parpose of awarding the prize, for the best plan for a bridge over the Kauaeranga. Several plans were submitted, but as some of the competitors had omitted to comply with the regulations it *was decided to adjourn until this afternoon in order to give them a chance. At the meeting this afternoon of the Orphanage Committee, Mr H. H. Adams' plan was selected. Tenders will be called for the erection of the bridge at once.. .; _ ■'•■ . V". ..-■,. .;■■■: ■■■■

Attention is directed to the sales advertised^by Mr McGregor in another column. It be seen that the dates have been slightly altered.

A considerable portion of the time at the 8.M., Court this morning was occupied in hearing a Maori case. Mr .Dodcl called three witnesses for the plaintiff, and a. surprising similarity was noticeable in their evidence. He said he had three more to call but did not think it necessary. Mr Miller gave a sigh of relief, saying he thought there would be fully 13.

We understand that in a day or so an enquiry will be held by Mr Kenrick into the truthfulness of certain allegations made in a petition by certain natives against one of the Goldfields officials.
