This day. Cattle Stealing. The case against Graham Flower for stealing fifteen head of cattle from Walker Bros., valued at £135, was heard today at Bangiora. A large amount of evidence was heard, and ultimately the accused was formally committed to the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed, the accused in one surety of £500, and two sureties of £250. Arson, At the same Court Jarvais Nelson was charged with setting fire to eleven stacks of grain at Mr Thomas', knowing them to be insured. He was also committed for trial. The charge against W. Major of assisting was deferred to Thursday next. Bail was allowed, himself in £500, and two sureties of £250. ". Fixes ia Canterbury. During the past year there have been eighty-two fires in Canterbury, on which claims have been paid to the amount of £54,440. Of this, £32,000 was for fires in Christchurch. ,For three months, however, there has been no conflagration here since the lad Osborne was arrested.
Diphtheria in Hokitika. In Hokitika several cases of diphtheria have broken out in town, and iv consequence the State school has been closed for a time.
