THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, APRIL 13, 1880.

Fob some years the Thames people hare been fnlly alive to the necessity that existed for a high school—one-in which children could attain a higher state of efficiency than in the ordinary schools. In order that the place should not be behindhand in educational matters steps were taken by Sir George Grey, and an Act was passed incorporating a High School for the Thames, and authorising the setting apart of £10,000 worth of land in the Te Aroha as an endowment. The Board of Governors, after surmounting many difficulties, has at length succeeded in opening the school, and now it rests with the people of the Thames to support? it. The ordinary schools under the jurisdiction of the Board of Education, although of a much higher order than similar institutions in Great Britain, do not afford sufficient scope for the development of the mental faculties of the coming generation. The Board of Governors have done everything that lay in their power to organise the present school on a firm and substantial basis, and they have succeeded in obtaining the services of Mr Adams, 8.A., who is well known as a first-class instructor. Opportunities are given for the study of languages, and mathematics,' and from the efficiency attained by the principal of the school, there is small doubt that pupils will rapidlj advance in the knowledge of such great necessaries. With such facilities within reach, the Thames people should take the advantage of them, by giring their children a sound education, one which the present age demands—when a man of scant education is considered of little account.
