Local Industries.

In response to the advertisement from the Mayor and County Chairman, calling upon persons interested in fostering and promoting industries to meet at the Borough Chambers this evening, a large number of gentlemen assembled. Pre* sent —His Worship the Mayor fin the Chair), Messrs Marshall, Hopkins, Minnie, Bawden, Brown, McCaul, Cocks Porter, Benshaw, McCullough, Hogg, Price, Aitken, Speight, Osborne, McGowan, Wilkinson, Edwards, Barlow. F. C. Dean, and Bennett. After some remarks from Mr McCaul and Mr McGowan, as to the course to be adopted Mr Speight moved "That all persons interested in trade be requested to famish the committee in writing with information, regarding their particular calling. Mr Osborne seconded.

Mr Mennie suggested that the com- „■ mittee visit each tradesman and make enquires in the direction required. Mr Porter thought tradesmen should be only too pleased to give the Committee the information asked, as it was for their benefit. Mr Speight exptaine£jjr£t the Com* mission was appointed fdt the purpose of collecting information which might be used in Legislation, and in the re-arrange-ment of the tariff.

After some farther discussion it was arranged that an advertisement (which appears in another column) should be inserted, calling for information to be sent in by four o'clock to-morrow evening. . -
