ANNUAL EEPOBT. The usual sub-committee was appointed to draw up the annual report for submission at the annual meeting. HOUSE SUBGEON'S BEPOBT. The Surgeon's report showed that two persons had died in the Hospital during the month. It also stated that the nurse had been discharged, and that another had been engaged in her place. Mr Mcllhone moved that the consider^ tion of the report be postponed until after the correspondence was read, as he was informed that some matters might arise which would involve discussion, and might end in the rejection of the report. This was agreed to. THE NUESE.
Mrs Johnson (late nurse) sent a letter to the Committee complaining of the manner in which she bad been treated by Dr Payne and Mr Aitken, and setting forth the reasons why she had sent in her resignation. Mr Mcllhone proposed that a subcommittee be appointed to investigate the matter, and in the course of his remarks said that if rumours which bad reached
him were true, it was the duty of the Committee to take into consideration whether a surgeon of the Hospital, found guilty of such conduct, could be worthy of the confidence or respect of the subscribers. He instanced the conduct of Dr Payne in refusing to consult with Dr Callan in regard to the treatment of the child Martin, and also on the unfair manner, and untrue statements made by Dr Payne with reference to the death of Mrs Thomas, who died recently at Tararu. He (the speaker) could bring- ample evidence to show that Dr Payne had stated in the bar of a public house that the woman died in consequence of unskilful treatment, and be contended that any professional man guilty of such conduct was not fit to hare charge of the Hospital. After considerable discussion, the matter, dropped, and the report was adopted on the motion of Mr Hudson.
