NEW WHAU.
This mine was visited to-day. On goi«g down the winze it was found a small stage has beea erected about 10 feet from the top, and the manager was engaged breaking quartz down from the Albuniia side. It may here be mentioned that during the sinking of the first few feet of tho winze the actual boundary was made one side of the winze, the quariz being taken out quite close up to the line. Gold being obtained more plentifully as sinking proceeded the line was not stripped clean, and the quariz being-broken to-day was that which had been left standing. There was a nicelooking vein of gold luuning perpendicularly on the side of the winze, and from
this the best of the stone was obtained. There was about 601bs broken at the time of my visit, but it was estimated that about 2001bs would be the result of the day's breaking down. Below the stage at the bottom of the winze no work was in progress. A stringer was observed coming in from the hanging-wall, and this will junction with the main lode a few feet down the winze. The quartz at the bottom of the winze is scarcely of so favorable a quality as that broken near the top, and altogether I was not very favourably impressed with the prospects of the bottom.
