Thomas Birch, formerly Mayor of Dunedin and member of the Dunedin City Council, died on the Penguin during her passage from Gisborne. He left Dunedin in order to recover his health, but tue passage was exceedingly rough, and deceased became worse, and finally succumbed.
Mr Holiest on is a passenger per Penguin.

The native at Abipara, who affirms he saw a sea serpent, gives a circumstantial description of the monster.
Pleuro-pneuojonia is spreading. Yesterday the Inspector killed a cow at Ireland's farm at Panmure, the right lung being infected. The Cattle Board meet to-day to consider the steps necessary.
