The Customs returns for this month shew the revenue to be £11,062 8s Id against £21,906 4s 8d for the corresponding month of last year.
The next section of the Wellington and Woodyille railway is about to be commenced, which will give employment to a large number of men.
Mrs Fisher, who drew Foul Play in a sweep on the Wellington Cup drew the same horse in the Dunedin Cup, thus winning £1000 within one month.
A laborer named Alex. Brown, working at the Corporation Works at Newton, was killed this morning by a fall of earth. He was working under an incline, when a large mass of earth gave way completely burying him. After great difficulty he was extricated and removed to the hospital, but before reaching there he expire. Brown was one of those lately taken on the works, and leaves a wife and two children.
