The French Convicts. In reply to the telegram forwarded by the Mayor containing a resolution passed by the City Council deprecating the importation of Communists, his Worship received the following reply from G. S. Cooper, Under Secretary, "In reply to your Worship's message' expressing in-, dignation at the action of;'the French authorities at New Caledonia, in sending a vessel with released convicts to New Zealand, Mr Hall directs me Co say that the question is engaging careful attention of the Government, and if it should be established that the action of the New Caledonian Government has been such as to justify a remonstrance on the part of the Government, the necessary steps will be taken for that purpose.—G'. 8. Cooper."
An action for assault brought by M. Peltzer, a French resident, against W. Bishop, owner of the schooner Griffin, and arising out of the landing of -the Communists was dismissed. A.man named Proude, who left in one of Hilditch's boats for Kohimarama yes terday, was picked up in the barbor yesterday afternoon. The boat capsized off the North head, and he had been swimming an hour and a half before being rescued. - J. C. Young, Government Land Purchaser, has been arrested at Tauranga on three charges of embezzling three amounts of £51, £7, and £10 entrusted to him as. agent for the purchase of land. , Bail was accepted, himself in £1000 and j two sureties of £500 each.
