AUCKLAND

Last night. The annual inspection of Volunteers is being conducted by Colonel Leckie. Wm. A. Baker, a respectably-connected young man, was sentenced to two months imprisonment with hard labor for obtaining goods on false pretences by means of a cheque oh the Colonial Bank of New Zealand. He fainted on being taken into the corridor of the Court.

Wm. H. Binden, head master of the Newton East School, was charged with assaulting Edward Golding, a pupil 10 years of age, by flogging him for truancy. The case was dismissed, each party to pay their own costs. The boy had been flogged last quarter for the same offence. He was absent last quarter 68 times out of a possible 106; this quarter 17 times out of a possible 30.
