AUCKLAND
Last night. The annual inspection of Volunteers is being conducted by Colonel Leckie. Wm. A. Baker, a respectably-connected young man, was sentenced to two months imprisonment with hard labor for obtaining goods on false pretences by means of a cheque oh the Colonial Bank of New Zealand. He fainted on being taken into the corridor of the Court.
Wm. H. Binden, head master of the Newton East School, was charged with assaulting Edward Golding, a pupil 10 years of age, by flogging him for truancy. The case was dismissed, each party to pay their own costs. The boy had been flogged last quarter for the same offence. He was absent last quarter 68 times out of a possible 106; this quarter 17 times out of a possible 30.
-Six of the French Communists have gone to Whangarei to seek foy work at the coal mines or gumfields, and the local police have been instructed not to interfere with them in any way that would prejudice their chances of employment. This day. The Hon. Mr Whitaker has appointed Mr Maxwell an Engineer to report on the alleged silting up'of the Aucklandharbor.
The Harbor Board proposes a considerable increase in the wharf dues, with a view, of increasing its revenue, and providing funds for the construction of a larger graving dock.
The volunteers will give a bauquet to Colonel Leckie next week.
Mr Law son, Commissioner of Railways is here examining the Auckland lines. The traffic on the Auckland lines is rapidly increasing, and the proportion of the working expenses being now §9% per cent., whild last year it was 20 per cent, higher. .
The Waikato Farmers' Glub retolredj to bring into force the eleventh clause of the Diseases of Cattle Act, and appointed a sub-committee for the purpose.
A great number of visitors are at the Pay of Islands Eegatta, and the affair is txpected to be a great success.'
Captain McKeuzic was re-elect Chairman of the Harbour Board yesterday. He spoke of the onerous nature of the duties, and said he could not afford the time. The members agreed that provision should be made in the amended Act to remunerate the Chairmen of the Board. . '•-'.' ■-■
