The Royal Commission was formally opened at Hawera yesterday, but no regular sitting will take place for about a week.
Second Lieutenant A. D. Bennett, of the Wellington Naval Brigade, has been appointed first Lieutenant, vice Lieut. Ingles resigned. The Brigade intend sending 100 men to the Easter encampment at Christ church, exclusive of their band. -
The Early Closing Association hare come to satisfactory arrangements with the drapers in reference to closing their shops at 6 o'clock of an evening, Saturdays excepted. This day. At the Police Court, Capt. Dempsey, of the schooner Darcy Pratt, was summoned by the Collector of Customs for carrying seamen who were not on the articles. It being the first offence he was fined 10s and costs.
