Tue case of Stephen Hughes charged with assault, with intent to commit rape is proceeding in the police court. The case excites much interest as accused being the son of a respectable citizen here, and a married man with children. The Evidence of the Girl. In the ease qf Stephen Hughea, the evidence shewed that the girl on whom the assault /ras committed is a daughter
of a settler named Saxon, aged fifteen, and was in the employ of the prisoner's wife as a domestic servant. On the morning of the 16th December, Mrs Hughes went out to visit a friend, and defendant, who was in bed, asked the girl to bring him some shaving water; she obeyed, when" he said he had something <o say to her, She refused to appronch him, and .went back to the kitchen. Shortly afterwards lie came softly behied her, seized her, and^ carried her into the bedroom and attempted to commit the offence. She struggled and got away, and got the assistance of an old man to protect her till Mrs Hughes returned, then she informed her and went home, and informed her parents, who waited on Hughes, when Mrs Hughes begged thefn not to prosecute. The matter, however, became public, and the police prosecuted.
