This day
A man named John Arthur Evans was drowned on Sunday at Waimakariri gorge. He went into swim with his mate, the latter came out to dry himself, leaving the other to wash himself, when suddenly Evans was missed, and was searched for in vain for upwards of an hour. On the same morning a young man named Win. A cliff, a blacksmith, was drowned at Waibari, the deceased though a good swimmer, jumped into a hole twelve feet deep, and on rising made no attempt to swim back again and was drown'd. It is believed he had a sudden attack of cramps.
