Owing to the representation of those inclined to take up shares io the Wew Caledonian Company, Mr Kowe has decided not to include the Tookey.and Golden Crown mine in the new venture, and has consequently declined the offer of the County Council. It is proposed to float a Company of 7,500 shares to work the Caledonian mine, and we believe all the shares will be subscribed for on the Thames. If; is said another speculator is about purchasing the Golden Crown and Tookey mines,
Mb Lambebt, F.R.A.S., writes respecting the comet:—This comet appears unexpectedly. Such visitors may at any time be expected, and but for such many people would never behold the few whose periods are known, and whose apparitions are imposing. It has generally been thougtt that the next brilliant visitor we "should look upon would be that bearing; the name of ' Gibers," and which will be due in 1887, but in the meantime it is possible that others will appear as the present one has done. Approximately the position of our present visitor is 22k 40sec right ascension, and 16degs 33m, south dccl nation with a tail measuring from 15 to 20 degrees; but for reasons assigned above, a more accurate determination is out of tho question. This would place the comet in Aquarius, and near the third magnitude star "Delta".of that constellation. It would appear probable that it is travelling seaward, in this case we shall soon lose it; but whether or not we shall be favoured with its presence in the early morning heavens alter a few weeks is uncertain, 89 the elements of its orbit cannot be obtained from its present position.
