COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Present—The County Chairman, Crs Deeble, Porter, Thorburn, Coutts, Carpenter, Brown. SLATJGHTEKHOUSE LICENSE. A slaughterhouse license was granted to Kilgour and Coombes, of Kauaerauga. Fee fixed at £5. GOLD DUTY. The Council's gold duty for November was received. It amounted to £379 5s 6d—B7, per cent of £43114s Bd. ALT3U.RNIA TRAMWAY. The manager of the Alburnia applied for permission to connect a tramway to the Prince Alfred mill, about Id be constructed, with the County- tramway near the Tookey mine. Granted. coktjuctor's application. A letter was read from A. Butler, applying for the payment of the sum ot £25, detained for pon-completion of a contract within specified time. The matter was referred to the Board of Works. KABAKA TEAMWAY. Several letters re the refusal of Messrs O'Brien and Co. to repair the Karaka tramway were read, and the Chairman intimated that this matter was now settled. THE GOLDEN CKOWN 3TKACAS. A letter was read from the County's bailiff, Mr Gribble, re the dispute between him and Mr Workman re the tributers' gold. Received. - CHABITABLB AID. . The Colonial Secretary sent three copies of a bill proposed to be introduced next session, dealing with hospitals and charitable aid. Suggestions were invited. Received. ANOTHEB MAOBI CLAIM. A letter was read from Mr J. E. Dodd demanding, on behalf of Baha Aperbama, compensation for the Waio-Karaka Water Race being erected on his land. It was decided to forward the letter to the Government. . HAPE CREEK BOAD. Mr Jas. Morrow wrote complaining •that the entrance to the mouth of his tunnel was impeded by the road being made at Hape Creek by the County Council. Referred to Engineer. TAPU BOAD. Thos. Taylor wrote urging the metalling of certain portions of this road before winter. Referred to Board of Works.
. - IE AKOHA BOAD. A letter was read from a native woman named Hareta te Kawana asking for £15, the balance of utii promised to her for aiding in getting the Te Aroha Road completed. She was to get £30, and had only received £15. It was resolved to write to the lady asking who had made the promise. WATER. BACE. A letter was read from Mr Stone stating that the Shortland Sawmill Co. was not. liable for the damage done to the Water Race.
The letter was referred to the Water Race Committee to take what steps they considered desirable.
A letter was read from Mr Bird complaining of the damage done to bis garden by the water from the County main while a connection was being made in Campbell street. Referred to the Water Race Committee. ■"'"- ■"■ BATES. ■ ...... H. Fisher, wrote asking that this years' rates be remitted on his property at Karaka creek, burnt down some time ago. It was decided to remit the rates. TIHBEB OF HAPE CBEEK TBAMWAY. On the motion of Cr Deeble, it was resolved to call tenders for the purchase of the old bridges on the Hape tramway. EEPOBT OF FINANCE COMMITTEE. The report of the Finance Committee was as follows:—"Your Committee have the honour to report that at a meeting held on the 23rd December, they examined and .passed the following accounts. —Accounts examined by Board of Works, £60 Os 6d ; James Smith, commission, £8 6s 6d; rent of chambers, £4 6s 8d ; travelling expenses, £3. Total, £75 13s Bd." The report was adopted. BEPORT ON WATEB BACK. The report of the Engineer on the Water Race was read as follows ; —"I have the honour to report that the flood of the 13th January did very little damage to the Thames Water Race. The dam at head work 3 has been partially repaired, and temporary repairs ha,ve been made to the trestle work afc the Maungurehu Creek, The manager of the Shortland Saw Mill Company repudiates any liability for damage done to the Thames Water Race by driving logs in the Ifauaeranga Creek and its branches. The contractor for laying the cast-iron mains has nearly completed his contract, and water has been admitted for the purpose of testing the pipes and joints. The pipes stand the test well, and there is no leakage, except in the wrought iron connection with the Race, which is now being remedied." THE WATEB BACE COMMITTEE. The return asked for by Or Greenville, re the sale of the water race iron, was laid on the table. , , , , The Chairman said he had been requested by Crs Wilkinson and Speight to bring before the Council the advisability of laying down the niueincu mains, in Sbortland, and to ask for some assistance in the matter.
Or Carpenter moved that the Council grant a subsidy of pound for pound on any money raised for the purpose.
Cr Thorburn objected to any unlimited amount in tne shape of..".subsidy being granted ; bufe if Of Carpenter would state a sum he would be happy to support his resolution,, .
Cr Porter objected to any nioney being voted for the purpose. The motion was lost, aud an amendment that the matter be referred to the Water Race Committee was carried. engineer's hejobts. The monthly report of the Engineer on the progress of works 1 during the month, and on a number of works proposed to be executed were read and approved of. This concluded the business.
