INVERCARGILL.
Yesterday.
Mr J. Colyeran, and old resident and formerly lessee of the Princess Hotel, Invercargill, was found dead in a hut yesterday on an island at Campbelltown owned by him. He was originally a member of the Bluff Harbor Board.
Mr Mair was to-day elected as Councillor for the South Ward, vice Mr Mororio deceased. He was opposed by Mr J. T. Thompson, late Surveyor-Gene-ral of the colony, but topped the poll by 29 votes.
Col. Scratchley arrived at the Bluff this morning, and during the day was engaged in making a survey of the entrance of the harbor with the view of reporting on ita capabilities for defence. He inspects the volunteers of Invercargill to-night.
An excursion train arrived this "aftersoon, Iti occupants were composed
principally of old settlers of Clutha, who are proceeding to the lakes for a day or two. Some 30 or 4u Dunedinites aro included in the party.
