ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

Kauaeranga School District.

The animal meeting of householders of the Kauaeranga School District, was held in the boys' schoolhouse at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. There was a good attendance, and Mr Speight occupied the chair. The secretary, Mr Newton, read (lie report of the committee, of which the following is a digest:—

"Sour Committee have pleasure in reporting that the average attendance during the year at the Girls' School has reached 200 ; and that the Boys' School 375. So. great bas beeu the atteudance under Mr Horatio Phillips' regime, that. the Board have limited the numbers on' the roll to 450, and your committee ■have had to advertise more than once tha«- fresh scholars could not be admitted. Last year's committee advised that a gymnasium should be provided. Apparatus has been purchased, and although it was nuuossary tor a short time to prohibit its. tue, the scholars are now safely getting the full benefit of the expenditure, which materially aids the instruction given by Lieutenant Barlow in calisthenics. Your Committee have urged the Board to extend the accomodation at the Boys' School by having a room built specially for the infant class, and by suggesting that tho floor space be raised in tiers throughout the school. Your Committee have now to congratulate their constituents on the possession of a new building for the'girls' school, and anticipate, from the accomodation provided, a large increase in the attendance. The new building is one of which the district may well be proud, and the committee feel sure that they only express the feeling of all their constituents in thanking the Board of Education for the attention given to the wants of the district."

After some discussion the report was adopted on the motion of Mr J. Grant, seconded by Mr Dick.

Mr MeKee asked how it was, in every change in the mastership of the School, there was a change in the school books.

Mr Itenskaw explained the change as resulting from the determination arrived at by the Board of Education to change the class-books from Nelson's to Collins'. This had been hurried on by the new master. He might say that the same change had been made all over the country, though he did not see there was any improvement. .Nominations were then called for by the Chairman. The following gentlemen were nominated:—Messrs Kenshaw, A. Aitken, W. S. Greenville, M. H.Airey, E. Farrell, Plant, Scott, Newton, H. T. Kowe, Wilson, Carpenter, Deeble, Ashman, and Bernewitz.

The ballot was then proceeded with, Messrs McCormick and McAndrew being appointed scrutineers, After about half

an hour the result was declared as I follows :—Farrell 66, lienshaw 64, Greenville 63, Aitken 61, Plant 43, Howe 29, Carpenter 23, Newton 21, Airey 20, Deeble 19, Scott 15, Bernewitz 14, Wilson 12, and Ashman 3. I The first seven were declared elected. After the declaration of the poll some desultory discussion took place on various matters, the ODly point worth recording being an unanimous expression of opinion from the meeting that it was inadvisable that all the Thames School Committees should unite.
